The Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) curriculum at Johnston Community College is designed to prepare entry level individuals with the skills needed to become certified law enforcement officers in North Carolina.
This program utilizes state commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to; subject control, firearms, criminal, juvenile, traffic, civil, investigative, patrol, court procedures, emergency responses and ethics.
Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study which include the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission to receive certification.
Special Admission Requirements Mandates:
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Applicants must be 20 years of age by the first day of class. Proof of age will be required at the time of registration. A waiver may be obtained at 19 years of age but the cadet must be 20 before the date of the state exam.
- High School graduate or GED. (*High School diplomas earned through correspondence not recognized.)
- Applicants may not enroll with any felony convictions regardless of date of offense. Applicants will have to have a criminal history evaluation by the school director prior to enrollment.
- Successfully complete the College reading placement assessment as outlined by the state of North Carolina.
(*With a score at or above tenth grade level or equivalent.)
- Possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the police academy last?The academy is a full-time day academy that lasts 17 weeks. Classes normally run from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with extended night training in firearms, patrol techniques, driver training, etc.
Students will receive 19 credit hours toward their associate degree at Johnston Community College upon completion of the academy.
How hard is BLET?Police cadets participate in a demanding but obtainable program that consist of physical activities that help in preparation for a challenging career in law enforcement. Activities include running, weight training, and group exercises. Weekly academic tests are given to measure understanding.
After graduating from BLET, does the certification last indefinitely?No. Graduates must be hired or "sworn-in" by a law enforcement agency within 12 months from their graduation date or the certification will expire.
What is the cost of taking the BLET program?If the student acquires a sponsorship letter from a police department then there is no charge for tuition for taking BLET. The student is responsible for books, a physical examination and physical training uniforms. The costs of books, fees, and PT uniforms are approximately $675.
Is ammunition provided by Johnston Community College?Yes. JCC will provide required ammunition at no cost.

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise.
