Employability Skills Training - Fee Waived to Qualified Participants

HRD Tuition and Fee Waiver: Career Development provides skills assessment services, employability skills training and career development activities for adults who are unemployed or underemployed. Registration fees for the following Career Development classes may be waived for individuals who meet the following criteria:
  • Unemployed
  • Received notice of pending layoff
  • Working and eligible for Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (FEIT) or
  • Working and earn wages at or below two hundred percent (200%) of the federal poverty guidelines.

Upcoming Courses:

Basic Computer Skills (36 hours)

Students will be taught basic computer skills while developing employability skills. Focus of the class will be to improve keyboarding abilities and increase the student's comfort level with computers. Emphasis will be on the role of technology in the workplace. No prior computer experience is necessary.

Dates/Days: September, 09, 2014 - October, 16, 2014 (T/Th)
Course Times: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Location: JCC Main Campus - Elsee Bldg.
Registration Fee: $125*
Note: This class is part of the Human Resources Development (HRD) program. HRD courses may be fee-waived if financial eligibility requirements are met (unemployed, underemployed, received notice of a layoff). Eligibility will be determined the first night of class.

Direct Care Basics

Trains you to be an aide to provide personal care to clients with limited assistance in home care and in other settings where the Nurse Aide I is not required.

69 hour class Fee-waived for unemployed or underemployed or $180

Other career options are employment in group homes for individuals with developmental disabilities, mental illness and/or behavioral needs, adult care homes and family care homes. Some of these settings require additional training within the first six months of employment.


Dates/Days: September, 30, 2014 - December, 16, 2014 (T/W)
Course Times: 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Location: JCC Main Campus
Registration Fee: $180

Hospitality Heroes (FREE! ONLINE!)

Hospitality Heroes is an online training program for employees and potential employees of the tourism industry designed by the Johnston County Visitors Bureau. Hospitality Heroes will unify Johnston County’s tourism industry by teaching front line employees about tourism, their local destination and customer service.
The online course takes participants through three modules and takes approximately 2 hrs to complete.

• What is Tourism, the first module, explains tourism on a national, state and local level.
• My Local Destination, the second module, explains Johnston County as a destination.
• License to Serve, the third module, explains how to deal with customers and tips for quality customer service.

This class is available online to participants for one month.

Please fill out the registration form and submit by the 25th of the month for enrollment in the following month’s class.

Introduces you to general job requirements, necessary skills and responsibilities of the Personal and Home Care professional. Learn Health Care CPR in this class.

Job Searching Using Technology (45 Hrs)

This course is designed to enhance the job seeker’s ability to use technology in the job search process. The instruction presented in this class will focus on assessing one’s technology literacy, developing a basic understanding and development of moderate computer skills, using technology in implementing job search strategies, using technology in creating employment related documents and understanding the impact of social networking on employment.

Resume Writing for Job Seekers (9 Hrs)

In this class you will learn how to create a successful resume for your next employment and how to complete an online application and attach a resume to the file. You will learn interviewing skills needed for your next job interview. Bring your experience, educational history and reference contact information.
