The DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST) is an exam that allows for the awarding of college credit for knowledge acquired outside of a traditional classroom. JCC students as well as the general public may take DSST exams in the Testing Center in room C1109 of the Wilson Building. Advance registration is required.
Johnston Community College administers DSST exams once a month on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m.in the Wilson Building Room C1109 on the JCC main campus. All test takers must present a current and valid picture identification such as a driver’s license, passport, or student identification card. Expired IDs are not acceptable. Students may not test without appropriate identification. DSST exams have a two-hour time limit to complete.

JCC students who perform satisfactorily on the exam will receive a grade of X. The appropriate department will determine the amount of credit awarded within a specific program. DSST policy is subject to change as necessary.
For questions and to find out more information about these exams, you can contact the testing coordinator at JCC by calling (919) 209-2228.
DSST credit must be approved by the college registrar prior to taking the test.
To secure a reservation for an exam date, send a DSST registration form and an administrative fee of $15 (payable to JCC) no later than one week prior to the test date(two weeks for essay optional test) to the following address:
Johnston Community College

Smithfield, NC 27577
On the day of testing, an $80 DSST examination fee is required. The fee will be paid via credit card online during registration on the day of your exam.
An unofficial score report will be given to the student immediately after testing. One official score report is allowed per test and will be sent to your respective college or university of choice approximately four weeks after testing. You will be able to select your college or university recipient during the registration process.
DSST regulations state that if a student does not successfully pass an exam, they must wait 90 days to retake the same exam.
