Leadership Johnston FAQs
What is Leadership Johnston? Leadership Johnston is a leadership development program sponsored by the Johnston County Association of Chambers of Commerce and Johnston Community College. The mission of the program is to enhance the leadership skills of people throughout Johnston County through a focused capacity building effort. The skills to be learned through the program are designed to help participants be more productive leaders in the workplace and to encourage active civic leadership as volunteers, volunteer leaders and holders of public office.
The curriculum topics include leadership development training, teambuilding, introduction to local nonprofit groups, business and industry; local government, public safety, law and order, education, health and human services, heritage and tourism. The format is a mixture of training sessions, guest speakers, small group activities, a group project and community tours.
Who can apply? The program is primarily marketed to the Chamber members of the six Chambers of Commerce in Johnston County but is not limited to only Chamber members.
What is the schedule/time commitment? Leadership Johnston is a nine month commitment. The class meets for a brief orientation in September and classes meet the first Wednesday of each month beginning in October and concluding with graduation in June. There is a one-night out-of-town teambuilding retreat that is mandatory. Each participant is allowed to miss no more than 16 hours (or 2 sessions). Participants who exceed the 16 hours will not receive their certificate at graduation but will have an opportunity to make up the missed hours/sessions during the next year and receive their certificate at that time. Each class will also be asked to participate in a group project that may require some additional meetings and time commitments outside of the all-day sessions.
What is the cost? The cost of the program is determined by the Leadership Johnston County Steering Committee on an annual basis as determined by budgetary needs. The tuition covers all materials for the course, lunch during each session, team building retreat, transportation during each session as necessary, and the participants’ graduation event. Approximate cost is $600.
How are participants selected? The course is designed for those who represent various business and professional sectors of the community. Those who want to learn more about the community while developing and refining leadership skills are encouraged to participate, whether they are new to Johnston County or have lived here for many years. Participants are selected after careful consideration of their leadership potential, community interest and involvement, accomplishments, recommendations, and ability to assume community responsibility. The course is limited to 20 participants.
