Academic & career readiness staff at Johnston Community College and J & M Auction in Smithfield brought lots of smiles to faces and joy in hearts Dec. 7 when they handed out toys, blankets and coats for Christmas to a record 209 children of students in the program for the third year.

Michelle and Jimmy Jones, owners of J & M Auction of Smithfield, and their auction patrons started donating bicycles, dolls, tractors and other toys for the third annual drive in January of this year.

"This is wonderful knowing these children are going to have a better Christmas," Michelle Jones said as she watched students received wrapped gifts for their families. "Our staff, buyers and sellers look so forward to this."

Academic & career readiness programs at JCC help adults refresh their reading and math fundamentals, complete a high school credential, or learn English as a second language.
