Plant a Row for the Hungry
The Arboretum at Johnston Community College (JCC) works with volunteers each week to support the national Plant a Row for the Hungry program where volunteers learn how to garden as they help feed the hungry in their community.
JCC has participated for several years, and volunteers continue to join the project. Each year, the Arboretum produces about 1,000 pounds of fresh food for the Food Bank of North Carolina and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.
The Food Bank has provided food for people at risk of hunger for 30 years; and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle recovers edible, nutritious food not being used by grocery stores and restaurants to feed the hungry within the community.
Our Plant A Row volunteers help both groups reduce hunger in Johnston County where more than 22,000 people live at or below poverty and more than 40% of school-age children receive free or reduced lunches.
Volunteer Today!
This active group meets each Thursday from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. to learn gardening techniques
while planting and harvesting vegetables for the hungry.
