TRIO Program at JCC Receives Renewed Federal FundingPublished: Wednesday, August 19, 2020
Johnston Community College’s Student Support Services Program (TRIO) has been re-funded for the next five years through the United States Department of Education. The new grant runs from September 1, 2020 through August 31, 2025 with a total funding amount of $1.3 million.
“The staff and I are delighted to have another opportunity to serve students and we look forward to seeing the TRIO students reach extraordinary achievements at JCC,” said Felita C. Carr, director of the program.
Initially funded in 2001, TRIO currently serves roughly 160 JCC students. The program is designed to assist with academic goals, including graduating with a degree and transferring to a four-year college or university. The program follows a strengths-based model and focuses on offering comprehensive services to support student achievements.
TRIO’s services at JCC include leadership opportunities; study skills; tutorial services; academic, financial, or personal counseling; assistance in securing admission and financial aid for enrollment in four-year institutions; and, guidance on career options, mentoring, and volunteerism.
“We have proven that our interventions work to help all students succeed here at JCC,” said JCC President David Johnson. “We look forward to continuing the outstanding services we’ve been providing for years to our students and helping future generations of Jaguars excel over the next five years.”
