General Info/Tutoring Guidelines

• Jaguar Tutoring and the Jaguar Writing Portal serve as tools, not the sole tool, of academic support for students. Students in need of academic support should also contact faculty for assistance.
  
  
• Students needing academic support for courses beyond what is allowable in terms of amount of time per day, number of reservation blocks per week, or other allowable assistance should meet with the course instructor and/or an advisor to determine the appropriateness of the course and/or program of study for the student at this time.
  
  
• Tutoring is available for courses in which a student is enrolled currently – not courses that have been dropped from a student’s schedule or an anticipated course.
  
  
• Students should recognize the purpose of tutoring and the proper role of the tutor. Tutors will provide reinforcement of classroom instruction through demonstration, explanation, clarification, modeling, etc. The tutor will NOT: proofread writing assignments, complete homework, write papers, give answers, develop a topic/idea, or perform under an unreasonable time limit.
  
  
• Students are expected to have all homework and other materials completed prior to the tutorial session. Students should not expect to use tutoring sessions to complete homework.
  
  
• Students should be prepared for tutoring by bringing the following items to in-person tutoring or having these items readily available during virtual tutoring: course syllabus, textbook, calculator (if applicable), class notes, assignment directions, grading rubrics.
  
  
• Tutors may not assist with homework or other graded assignments. Tutors also may not assist students with assignments that are designed as self-assessments whether graded or ungraded.
  
  
• Students utilizing both in-person and virtual tutoring sessions should expect to work with other students in the same course as well as the tutor. Likewise, students’ patience is necessary as tutors circulate while serving multiple students simultaneously.
  
  
• Students may save whiteboard examples during in-person and virtual tutoring but may not record sessions in any way, unless directed by Accessibility Services at Johnston Community College.
  
  
• Tutoring will not necessarily result in perfect work and does not guarantee an “A” in either the course or on a specific assignment. Grading of all student assignments is solely the responsibility of the instructor who is the ultimate authority.
